melonbotics Super Servo Plus

The melonbotics Super Servo Plus is a high-performance continuous rotation servo, perfectly suited to applications requiring high rotation speed with minimal weight. It is ideal for lightweight, fast intakes and outtakes.

The optional mounting plate, selectable at checkout, allows effortless mounting of the Super Servo Plus to 8 mm pitch build systems.

Motor Performance

The Super Servo Plus exhibits behaviour you may be unfamiliar with. Its controller is current-limited to protect the servo bus and keep current through the PWM cable reasonable.

The motor's natural stall current is approximately 4.7 A, while the controller caps servo-bus draw at approximately 3.9 A.

Recommended operating range: Gear the mechanism so the servo operates at approximately 450–700 RPM—the third operating region shown on the motor graph. This provides better efficiency while still producing maximum power. Your battery will thank you.

Checking the Operating Point

There are two ways to estimate where the Super Servo Plus is operating on the graph:

  1. Use an encoder to measure rotation speed. Account for any gearing between the Super Servo Plus and the mechanism.
  2. Measure servo-bus current in series through the positive 6 V wire of a PWM extension cable, then compare the measured current with the graph. Disconnect robot power before modifying the cable, use the multimeter's suitably rated high-current input, and never connect a meter in current mode directly across power and ground.

Usage Ideas

Active Sample Intake

A Super Servo Plus drives the top set of flaps and another drives the bottom set. Each uses a 1.4:1 reduction.
